Requirements

Student Requirements

    1. Respect for teachers.

    2. Respect for other students.

    3. Faithful attendance and class participation.

    4. Modest and appropriate dress.

    5. Completion of assignments (Teachers will assign a “minimal requirement” of work that students must complete to maintain a meaningful class environment. Teachers will also suggest extra assignments that parents may choose to have their student complete.)

    6. Respect for facilities. When leaving a classroom or lunch area, students should ensure the area is cleaned up, trash is thrown away, papers are taken home, etc.

Parent Requirements

    1. Timeliness in getting students to class.

    2. Serving in whatever role they are assigned and finding a replacement if they are unable to serve.

    3. Staying involved in their student’s learning, ensuring their child is completing assignments and participating appropriately in the class.

    4. Commitment to dealing with any problems that arise through appropriate channels and resisting gossip.

    5. Responsibility and supervision of children not participating in classes while at Compass.

Teacher Requirements

    1. Treating students with dignity. Co-op teachers are not in authority in place of or over parents, but rather are called alongside to help. Teaching in our co-op is a ministry responsibility, where we are helping students in their homeschooling journeys. Teachers should treat students with respect and care, being sure to talk to parents if there is a problem with a student.

    2. Teaching all classes from a biblical, creationist, and Christ-honoring perspective.

    3. Preparing a syllabus to distribute to parents before the year starts. (Examples are available.) Include class descriptions that are as specific as possible so parents have a clear idea of what is offered in the class so that they can make decisions about the fit of a particular class for their child.

    4. Letting the helper know how she can assist you.

    5. Arranging for a replacement teacher when absent due to illness, vacation, etc.

    6. Maintaining a tone of encouragement in the classroom.

    7. Checking work in some way so that students feel a sense of accountability.

      1. Helpers can inform the parents when students are not completing work and/or struggling in class and offer to help in resolving the issues if possible.

      2. If the missing work is adversely impacting classroom functioning, discuss the situation with the student. If the situation does not resolve, speak to the student’s parent.

      3. If the issue remains unresolved after you’ve spoken with the parent, the teacher can notify a co-op administrator for assistance.

Helper Requirements

    1. Arrive to class 15 minutes prior to class starting to help prepare for class.

    2. Being proactive in asking the teacher how you can help.

    3. Doing any copying or prep work the teacher requests.

    4. Helping with classroom management and projects.

    5. Ensuring that the room is cleaned up at the end of class.

    6. Teaching any classes you have agreed to teach (if you are helping the teacher in this way).

    7. Assisting in grading and tracking the student’s homework.

    8. Arranging for a replacement helper when absent due to illness, vacation. etc.
